The venue for many wonderful family holidays, our villa with Wifi, is only 300 metres from a long sandy beach, an easy walk through the dunes or down the wooden walkways. Set on its own land this self-catering summer holiday rental is ideal for a group of friends or two families where one can get together in the large lounge or relax in a hammock slung among the pine trees. The large patio, ideal for outdoor meals or soaking up the sun, is sheltered by the L shaped building, assuring maximum privacy. Just a couple of miles from the bustling town of Esposende yet rural enough to hear the pine cones cracking in the sun.
The local shops, a 10 minute walk from the villa, include a well stocked mini supermarket where hot rolls can be bought each morning, a cafe with free internet and a fishmonger where locally caught fresh fish can be obtained. There are two big supermarkets in Esposende, Continente being just off the A28 motorway. There are many small family style restaurants in the town and Frango de Guia, a take-away, a few minutes from the house at the junction of the Avenida dos Banhos with the main road.
Local activities include water sports both in Esposende and Viana, the estuary of the River Cavado being particularly well known for kite surfing; horse riding and canoeing can be found in Gandra a few miles away. There are golf links at Estela and Barco de Lago holiday village, also a particularly attractive one in Ponte de Lima, a town worth visiting in any case with its medieval bridge and historic centre.
Local visits should include the S. Lourenço hill. Here can be seen the remains of an Iron Age hill top fort with several huts reconstructed; a tiny chapel dedicated to the saint and on a clear day a magnificent view over the low land to the river and beyond.
The River Neiva, slightly north of the villa provides beautiful river beaches with many waterfalls and deep pools for swimming. The river can be crossed in various places by ancient flat stone bridges and there are extensive paths for walking along the river bank.
Ofir, a sand bank on the opposite side of the estuary is also of interest. Although today it supports many second homes and holiday lets it is still possible to walk a good way along the sand bank. It has a romantic history once being the base for robbers and thieves, rather like Lorna Doone country in Devon.
There is a market in Esposende on alternate Monday mornings and a weekly market in Barcelos all day every Thursday. Despite parking difficulties Barcelos is well worth a visit with its ruined castle and ancient bridge and the market is the biggest in northern Portugal. Apart from meat, fish and the succulent fruit and veg on offer, there are plenty of stalls selling locally produced items, pottery, basketry, wood etc together with the gypsies selling very cheap clothing, much of it rejected orders from abroad sometimes with foreign price tags already attached!
Beside those already mentioned, there are many local towns worth visiting. Braga was originally a Roman settlement and was an ecclesiastical centre for NW Iberia for centuries. Guimarães, the birth place of Portugal, boasts a greatly restored castle and palace together with a medieval centre. Porto with its world heritage centre and iconic D. Luis bridge has many interesting features and a visit to the port wine cellars just across the river is always enjoyable. Directions for a trip to Porto, parking at the Alfândega can be found in the house. From here it is a short walk and an elevator ride to the historic centre.
